Chances are the seats in the body of the faucet itself have become worn or wiredrawn. "Wiredrawn" is a term used in the trade to describe a groove worn into the faucet seat from the water that has been leaking past the washer. Many times it is invisible to the eye. You may be able to feel it with a small screwdriver or some such object. Regardless, once this has occurred your only option is to replace or repair the seat. In new faucets this does not present much of a problem as they are designed with renewable seats. In other words, you can simply remove them from the faucet and install new ones. In a vintage faucet this may not be the case. If the seat is rounded in the center it means it is not removable and you have to reface it. This tool will do just that. Simply follow the instructions on the back of the package. You remove the faucet handle and the stem, insert the reseating tool and turn the handle. In very short order you will once again have a smooth surface for the washer to seal.
